Encouraging statistics from the HSE?

The new statistics released by the HSE are encouraging.  Generally speaking, the figures show that year-on-year employers in the UK are getting better at protectiing their employees from injury in the workplace.

However some of the figures still make pretty grim reading:

  • 24,726 major injuries at work such as amputations or fractures; and
  • 90,653 injuries serious enough to warrant 4 days or more off work.

In addition, the number of people who suffered a fatality in the work place between April 2010 and March 2011 rose from 147 last year to 171 this year.  It is clear therefore that more can still be done to ensure safety at work.
